What is packaging design?

Packaging design is the work of shaping and dressing whatever physically holds your product , a box, a pouch, a bottle label, a mailer , so it protects what's inside, communicates what it is at a glance, and gets picked up over the option next to it. It's part structural engineering (the dieline, the fold, the fit) and part graphic design (the label, the color, the hierarchy of what's printed where).

Unlike most design work, packaging has to survive handling, shipping and a shelf , it's judged under fluorescent lighting from three feet away as often as it's judged on a screen.
