Most design systems don't fail because the original components were poorly designed. They fail because nobody owns their continued evolution.
Treat the system as a product
A design system needs users, maintainers, documentation, feedback loops, and a clear roadmap. Thinking of it as an internal product makes those requirements much easier to manage.
- Assign clear ownership.
- Document component usage.
- Create contribution guidelines.
- Review changes regularly.
- Remove components that no longer provide value.
